Port Stephens - NSW

One of my favourite destinations for a weekend getaway is Port Stephens.  It is a strange truth about the coast north of Sydney that only a tiny percentage of the millions who drive up the Pacific Highway ever bother to head east off the main drag

Those who bother to turn off to the region around Port Stephens - Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay, Corlette, Salamander Bay, South West Rocks - can afford a wry, knowing smile. They know about the quiet, sandy beaches, the beautiful marina at Nelson Bay, the bushwalks, the lazy fishing in tinnies, the ferries which ply the waters from Nelson Bay to Tea Gardens and offer free dolphin watching on virtually every trip, the good boardwalk restaurants, and the general ambience of quiet relaxation which seeps off Port Stephens and seems to slow everything down around the foreshores.

Smart people come here to relax. This is a holiday destination which is still under control and remarkably it is only two hours from the northern edge of Sydney. It is one of those regions that is hard to define in terms of holidaymakers.

It is therefore not surprising that Myan Breezes Guest House has found a niche as a kind of elegant and modern North Shore home perched among the treetops with pleasant views across Port Stephens.

Michael McErlane and his wife, Ruth, have taken a large, comfortable, open-plan house and turned it into a three-bedroom guesthouse. The rooms are spacious and modern. The bathrooms are huge and characterised by superior fittings and a great attention to detail. The lounge room, shared with other residents, is comfortable and relaxing. And the outside area includes a pleasant in-ground pool and a couple of wooden decks where, if you are feeling indolent, you can laze around, listen to the birds in the nearby trees and watch the sun sparkling off the waters below.

Myan Breezes is the quintessential modern B&B/guesthouse. No expense has been spared and quality is the keynote. Quality and size in terms of the rooms. Quality meals, quality bathrooms and bedrooms and a large, comfortable lounge room.

And as for the activities, Port Stephens is about relaxing.  Stroll along any one of the dozens of quiet beaches. Walk around Nelson Head with its excellent views from the lighthouse, the Nelson Bay marina and Little Nelson Bay beach. There is still nothing to compare with catching the ferry across to Tea Gardens. Apart from the pleasant journey, there is a strong chance that you will pass the dolphins. When you arrive in Tea Gardens, if you are interested in the mind of the present prime minister, you can walk across the bridge (it sings and vibrates when there is a strong southerly blowing) to Hawks Nest and ponder why anyone would want to return, over and over again, to this sleepy little holiday resort town. But then it still does have a charming 1950s ambience about it.
